2010 Lee Family Farm Tannat

Ron Silva is our source for this old world grape. His Silvaspoons Vineyard is in Alta Mesa, a sub-appellation of the Lodi AVA. The Silvaspoons Vineyard Tannat is planted on 101-14 rootstock. Rows are aligned north to south on a quadrilateral, T-bar trellising system enabling even sun exposure and good air flow. Sustainable farming methods result in a very healthy vineyard yielding very high quality grapes.

The 2010 vintage allowed for a very small and concentrated crop. After a relatively cool winter, heavy rains and wind in the springtime led to an uneven growing pattern during blossom. Although shoot thinning in late spring led to an even lower crop, it helped to make the vines more balanced. When the grapes ripened, the flavors were fully developed with balanced acidity. The Tannat was picked on October 7, 2010.

The grapes were de-stemmed before going into a small tank for whole-berry fermentation. The wine was left on the skins for ten days of extended maceration. The wine was aged in 1 year old French oak barrels and bottled in August 2011.

Lee Family Farm Tannat is dark red in color with aromas of plum, black licorice and pepper. The palate reveals intense flavors of molasses, pomegranate and black tea with a hint of smokey oak. The tannins are firm, yet well integrated, and perfectly placed acidity make this wine an excellent match for comfort foods like roasts and beef stew.
