The Double L Vineyard’s location in the northern end of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA affords Morgan the chance to grow the finest
cool climate wine grapes. Planted on east facing terraces overlooking the Salinas River Valley, the north-south vineyard row orientation provides optimum sun exposure and access to the strong afternoon breezes. The winds moderate the afternoon temperature, thickening the grape skins and concentrating flavors. The vineyard has been Certified Organic since 2002 and remains the only such vineyard in the appellation.

Although 2007 was typically cool and windy, this vintage shows a lot of intensity due to high stress on the vines from a dry winter preceding a cold, wet spring. The outcome was a 40% decrease in crop, focusing flavors.

Syrah is the last varietal to be harvested on the Double L. Ripe fruit is hand picked and sorted with optimal flavor and acidity. After being de-stemmed, 50% whole berry fermentation is started with native yeasts in small open tanks. Manual punch-downs and an extended maceration allow for great flavor and color extraction with well integrated tannins. Aging in 25% new French oak adds polish and elegance.

This limited production wine shows deep purple / black hues in the glass. Attractive aromas of black cherries and blackberry jam coupled with allspice and white pepper are carried onto the palate with a rich and full mouthfeel. Balanced acidity assures this wine will gracefully accompany meals, especially braised meats such as pork shoulder or pasta with a bolognese sauce...
