2010 Double L Vineyard Riesling

This inaugural vintage of the Double L Riesling is produced from one, small, acre plot planted on Morgan home estate. Located at the northern end the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, the organically and sustainably farmed Double L receives brisk afternoon breezes from nearby Monterey Bay. North-south vineyard row orientation allows for optimum exposure on the Highlands’ east facing terraces. Wind and sun combine for a long growing season, resulting in vibrant fruit flavors with balanced acidity.

The 2010 growing season was even longer than most in the Highlands. Above average rainfall in the spring combined with cool summer temperatures delayed the vines by about two weeks. Warm weather in late September ripened the fruit for a harvest that lasted through early November. The grapes achieved full phenolic ripeness due to the lighter, concentrated crop.

Our Riesling grapes receive a gentle whole cluster press upon arrival at the winery. Freshness and bright fruit character was preserved by cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation was arrested by quickly chilling down the tanks to achieve an off-dry style at a lower alcohol level. This process also maintained a small amount of carbon dioxide in the wine, which provides a slight, refreshing petillance or “spritz.”

In the glass, the 2010 Morgan Riesling displays a graceful, appealing nose of apricot, white peach, agave nectar and sweet spice. Classic Riesling flavors of honeyed-pear, green apple, apricot and orange zest mesh beautifully with high acidity. The wines off-dry style and low alcohol (much like a traditional German “Kabinett”) make it a natural pairing for spicy Asian-Fusion cuisine, cream sauced pastas, lighter cheeses and crème brûlée.
